As musical ideas shuttled back and forth across a P2P file sharing system, musical duo Skallander slipped between genres to create The Camels album.
Skallander is the earthy name for the collaboration between Matthew Mitchell (ex-Wellington jazz scene, lately Hungarian media mogul) and Bevan Smith (of Aspen, Signer, Marineville fame).
As composer/creator, Bevan has worked on music for art projects, theatre shows, dance works, TV adverts and films, notably the Bafta award winning “Touching the Void”. He continues to perfect his smooth 80’s style production on The Camels.
Matthew has played throughout the UK, Eastern and Western Europe, with Signer and in a number of free jazz and improvised music groups. He currently looks after his Hungary-Eastern-European IMPROVART label. His feel for the surreal, surfaces here and there among the sandpapered vocals. Finely grained as shifting sands they play off against apple crisp clicks and beats.
With the track 'Saint' anchoring the gold selling LOOP Select 006: Kono compilation and both 'Saint' and 'Wasted' receiving much airplay on New Zealand alternative stations, The Camels is sure to draw many to its caravan.
“Soothing and beautiful, with an unnerving ambience that give it an edge, so go soak yourself in it.” **** NZ Herald
“Touted as the best from the Loop staple… Skallander creates a perfect balance between indie rock and electronic show-gazing ambience. The Camels has been on constant rotation on my stereo and it doesn’t want to leave any time soon so I guess I’m touting them too. One fine album.” - MANUAL
"Listening to this disc could be likened to morphine, or some kind of opiate; aurally smooth and highly adictive...The Camels is moody, sensual and decidedly Wellington. I'd like o thank Loop for smiling on my record collection" - Reaktor
