Kingston Sound System unveil their latest single ‘As I Lay Me Down’ — a sun-soaked reggae reimagining of Sophie B. Hawkins’ 1995 classic. The track is the newest taste of Classic Hits In A Reggae Groove, a bold project pairing iconic vocalists with Jamaica’s finest musicians to breathe new life into legendary songs with an authentic reggae feel.
Hawkins re-recorded her vocals for the track, delivering a modern yet heartfelt performance that perfectly complements the laid-back groove, skanking guitars, and soaring horns of the all-star reggae band. “I love this version of ‘As I Lay Me Down’ — it fits my mood, my joy of being alive on our planet at this time,” says Hawkins. “What the band do with my music makes me smile, and I’m so happy to share it with you.”
Recorded in Jamaica with full artist involvement, the album features reggae royalty — musicians who’ve performed with the likes of Ziggy Marley, Peter Tosh, and Wyclef Jean. Classic Hits In A Reggae Groove delivers timeless classics with a warm, rootsy twist that feels both fresh and deeply grounded in tradition.
The release coincides with the 30th anniversary of ‘As I Lay Me Down’ and Hawkins’ upcoming performance at Glastonbury Festival. The new single joins reggae reinterpretations of hits like The B-52’s’ ‘Love Shack’, Blondie’s ‘Heart Of Glass’ and Steve Winwood’s ‘Higher Love’, showcasing a collection as nostalgic as it is innovative.
