“The most dangerous people in a free society are those who don’t know… It’s okay to not know. But if you don’t know, but think you do know … that is dangerous. Those are the signs of the end of an informed democracy.”
Think Inc., with support from Loop, National Geographic, Newstalk ZB, the University of Canterbury and the University of Auckland, are supremely excited to announce for the first time in New Zealand, Dr Neil deGrasse Tyson!
A Cosmic Perspective will see the most famous face in modern science perform two shows across New Zealand to Auckland and Christchurch audiences. Both shows will feature a personal presentation by Dr Tyson himself, a fire-side chat with a local personality, and an audience Q&A session to finish.
Expert on star formation, exploding stars, dwarf galaxies, and the structure of our milky way, best-selling author, Emmy Award winner, recipient of nineteen honorary doctorates, and a man who was once named “Sexiest Astrophysicist Alive”, Dr Neil deGrasse Tyson will guide Kiwi audiences on a trip across the cosmos, and help attempt to make sense of some of our biggest questions.
Dr Neil deGrasse Tyson is at the forefront of an ongoing movement to produce a society that counters ignorance and promotes scientific curiosity and literacy, critical thinking, and rational approaches to ensure our smooth transitions into a civilised future. Beloved as an author, scientist and enthusiastic science communicator through his public persona, he is perhaps best known for his StarTalk podcast and show, and his hosting of the acclaimed Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, the successor to Carl Sagan’s seminal series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage from 1980.
In 2017, as the discussions around scientific discovery are still some of the most fascinating we have, Tyson is one of the most well-equipped to answer. Are we likely to encounter alien life, and will they be protected by the same ethical codes we apply to each other? In the era of ‘post-truth’ and ‘alternative fact’, how have the roles of religion, political dogma and general scientific illiteracy fuelled the war on science and reason in western societies? Should we be concerned about the rapid sophistication of artificial intelligence, and does it threaten us with extinction? Or can we bypass this possible doom that looms close on the horizon?
The team at Think Inc. can barely contain their excitement at the return of the 21st century’s most recognisable and beloved champion of science and critical thought, and invite the New Zealand public to share in this excitement in 2017 as we attempt to answer these questions and more with Neil deGrasse Tyson: A Cosmic Perspective.
