Tū (Feat. Hone Harawira)
by Tipene / 2024
Release Notes
Tipene returns with his striking new single 'Tū', featuring the voice and influence of respected leader Hone Harawira. More than a song, 'Tū' is a statement of unity, resilience and truth, a waiata that calls for strength in the face of adversity.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Shae Sterling, the accompanying video captures the collective spirit of kotahitanga, filmed across key kaupapa including a powerful hikoi. With visuals supported by a team of Māori creatives and storytellers, Tū places Māori pride and political consciousness at the forefront.
“Matua Hone Harawira, thank you for being a pou for our people with the mana to stand and speak the truth when it counts. Thank you for inspiring this song,” says Tipene.
Musically, 'Tū' blends live brass and rhythm with Tipene’s signature lyricism, produced by 10A and mixed/mastered by Tipene himself. Additional musicians DJ Jayrasik (drums), Ella Maria (saxophone), Davey Jack (trombone/sousaphone) and James Lowe (trumpet), amplifies the song’s anthemic energy, bridging hip hop with protest-music fire.
The video, produced and edited by Shae Sterling, was filmed at Black Betty’s BBQ Venue, with stage art by legendary graffiti artist DLT. Footage from the hikoi was captured by leading Māori media practitioners including Pene Webber (Aorere Media), Whatanui Flavell (Haututū Creatives), Hemi Kapa-Kingi (Tautoru Media), Te Rawhitiroa Bosch (Rawhitiroa Creative), and Karetai Paul (HF Media).
